Let me begin by saying, becoming a Successful Physical Product Designer requires a combination of creativity and problem-solving abilities- along with the will to stick with it and see your dream physical product concept come to life.

hello christine creative online coach

A Quick introduction, in case you're new here....

Hello! I'm Christine Sacramone, Coach To Creative Entrepreneurs that want to build a successful physical product based business from scratch.

If you've worked an expert before then you know Coaching keeps you motivated and on track! Plus, I will help you avoid costly mistakes in product development.

While some designers are naturally talented, Coaching can help them achieve their full potential by providing guidance, feedback, and expert support- BUT what about all THE STEPS it takes to develop a physical product into a business?

Once you have your PRODUCT IDEA you need to turn it into a physical product based business. This requires several steps. Here are some of the essential steps you need to take if you want to learn how to design a successful physical product based business:

1. Coming Up With A Product Idea:

Hopefully you've succeeded finding a PRODUCT IDEA in Zone 1's: IDEA MAPPING Workshop.

2. Next You Need To Focus on Research & Development:

Before you start your business, you need to research your product idea and determine if it is feasible. You need to conduct market research, analyze your competition, and get to know your product niche intimately.

Basically, you're starting to create your business plan in this step and the steps to follow. QuickSource provides a variety of Guides to assist you with this important step.

How to Identify your exact ideal customer

3. Identify Exactly WHO Your Ideal Customer Is:

This will help you greatly to determine your marketing strategy: WHO are you really selling your products to?, Where should you sell your products?, How should you set the right price points?, And What types of packaging is required for your specific product category?

BUT most of all this step let's you know if you're product idea is any good to start with and if you plan to market it to the RIGHT Consumer- That's Really Important! QuickSource provides Zone 2's Workshop as well as accompanying Guides to assist you with this critical step.

4. Hone In On Your Product Cost's & Production Options:

Once you know what your customers want from you, you will be able to determine the right price to sell your products. And this may be a long term strategy with the goal to sell wholesale at a later date- BUT you need to know this now in order to set-up a profitable pricing structure.

Because everyone's product is different, it's best to schedule private coaching with Christine at QuickSource to get the answers you need.

5. Not Until This Point Should You Start Creating Your Products Prototype:

There are SO MANY ways to do this. It depends on your product type, the amount of money you have budgeted and whether you intend to hand make the item yourself or outsource manufacturing.

Once you've researched these categories, you need to create a prototype or visual specifications of your product. This will allow you to see your product come to life and provide the opportunity for you to make improvements before going into production. It also allow you to get a legit quote from a vendor or manufacturer. Private Coaching is Available for all of the remaining steps.

6. How Will You Protect Your Idea:

Not all product ideas require you to apply for patents, trademarks, or copyrights. You want to prevent others from stealing your idea and profiting from it- but there are some limitations as to the level of protection you'll actually receive vs the cost of applying for these legal applications.

Too many creators build up a lot of fear around this & get stuck! It's easy to get the answers you need.

7. Secure Your Funding:

In my professional opinion, it's a bit late at this point to begin thinking about how you will pay for the production of the products you want to sell. Product Based Businesses can be expensive to start-up and you NEED to do some research on this in Step 2.

Once you get to Step 7 you should have a quote from a material supplier, vendor or manufacturer and you should have a solid number as to what you need to invest in order to start selling your products.

There are various funds needed for a start-up, we are referring to the funds required for the physical products only.

Product Design sourcing and manufacturing tips

8. If You're Outsourcing Your Products Production:

This is the time to qualify a vendor for their manufacturing capabilities, discuss quality control issues, determine delivery lead times, discuss product testing that's required by law, determine the quantity you intend to order by sku, discuss receiving samples for approval prior to production, ask if packaging will be included in the quote (both shipping & retail packaging), negotiate vendors payment terms, etc.

There's a formula of questions to be answered in order to ensure confidence when you place your 1st order. I can help you with this.

9. Understand WHEN Your Products Need To Be In-stock:

It's critical for you to know this so that you can back into the amount of time it will take your products to be made, shipped to you, then delivered to the consumer. Seasonal products in particular can not waiver on a late ship date.

BUT it's not just seasonal items, if a retailer is relying on your products to fill their shelves on a certain date- you better be ready to deliver. The best way to ensure this is to properly back into a excel spreadsheet production schedule and use as your bible.

10. Receive Product Or Material Samples For Approval:

If your product is outsourced, you will require a sample to be made by the vendor for approval prior to starting production.

You wouldn't want an item made the wrong size, in the wrong material, the wrong color, or with a mold that does not meet your specifications. You want to avoid any surprises... so, I highly suggest a sample approval process is put into place before you place your purchase order.

11. Begin Manufacturing or Hand-making Your Products:

Once your finances are in order and you have approved your samples & negotiated your final quotation, you need to order your raw materials domestically for handmade items and project your quantities for manufacturing in the USA or overseas.

Now you are ready to place your purchase order. You should feel confident because you have followed every step in detail.

12. You Are Ready To Launch Your Product:

You need to launch your product on the RIGHT platforms. It can be a Shopify site, Etsy, Selling Wholesale on Faire, Amazon, or a number of other successful platforms- it all depends on WHERE Your Customers Are Hanging Out!

This is a topic we explore in Zone 2's Self-Guided Workshop: Identify Your Ideal Customer.
